You only need to be old enough to remember how the ceramic production of the immense Arabia factory, in the suburbs of Helsinki, was an integral part of the surge of Scandinavian design in the 1960s. Arabia was, literally, the absolute icon of this breath of renewal coming from the North. The design wave has receded. The Arabia label still exists, but the heroic factory is partly empty, and now renowned for something else: its collective of avant-garde artists, the Arabia Artists’ Studios. Initially designed by a handful of artists, the project was supported by Fiskars, the new owner of the premises, who even converted an entire wing of the old buildings into individual workshops. Our visit in October 2022 was enchanting and a huge discovery because, in just one afternoon, we were able to meet almost all of the finest Finnish ceramics. It is this experience that inspired us to create a first presentation, with a diversity and richness that will surprise you.
