Artist Profile
Ule Ewelt
Presentation
Ule Ewelt is a German artist with a predilection for the portrayal of the beasts of prehistory, creatures from a time when men dressed in hairy skins and a good dinner required an act of slaughter. Made of stoneware and then smoked as primitively as possible, her animals have the appearance of those revealed by thawing glaciers. Everything is as it should be, with the bulk of the beast preserved but here and there the furry coat showing the signs of age. Her modelling is so perfect, so just, that we can almost believe that we’re witnessing the moment of discovery.
These are wonderful sculptures that take us back to that lost era, the one of our precarious origins, when our relationship with the natural world was one of evident dependence. These beasts of Ule’s are only sculptures, but their strong almost shamanistic presence sets them on an additional level of communication, as though they wanted to break the spell of their own disappearance. These works are just pure magic!
